A 1000 mm2 export cable had suffered a failure in the region of an Intertidal Joint (ITJ), located approximately 2.5 km from the onshore transition joint. BPP-TECH were engaged by insurers to perform an independent investigation into the potential root causes of the failure.

BPP-TECH found several sub-optimal design flaws that were compounded by a radial crush load during incident or incidents. A timeline of events from installation to dropped objects and lateral displacements was also prepared using documentation from various sources to document incidents.

Inspection of cable sections and eventual dissection was performed. Various analysis techniques were carried out. Root causes were identified, and recommendations made for prevention of similar issues.
